    Sappho was the quintessential lyric poet of ancient Greece. Although the bulk of her poetry has been lost, she was well-known and greatly admired throughout antiquity as one of the greatest of lyric poets, and her immense reputation has endured through surviving fragments.
    In other poems Sappho is yet more acerbic, approaching the level of a curse in poem 37, for instance. Rivals or those who reject her approaches provoke violent hostility, as may be seen in poems 55 and 158. Most often, however, the emphasis is on the poet's own suffering, caused by "bittersweet" love (poem 130).
