    freeFEM3D is a 3D version of freeFEM. It is a 3D finite element PDE solver. It does not use standard FEM approximation but is based on fictitious domain method. The main reason for this is the absence of free 3D mesh generators. freeFEM3D, as well as its cousins (FreeFEM, FreeFEM+ and FreeFEM++), is a PDE solver driven by a user friendly language.
    The fruit of a long maturing process, freefem, in its last avatar, FreeFEM , is a high level integrated development environment (IDE) to solve numerically systems of partial differential equations (PDE) in dimension 1,2 3 and surfaces embedded in a 3D domain and lines embedded in a 2D or 3D.
    Although FreeFEM has quite some rich features for 2D mesh generation and manipulation, there are not so great things available for 3D meshes natively. So, importing 3D mesh files for complex geometries becomes a challenging task in finite element computation using FreeFEM.
    Some cool 3D mesh file formats are supported out-of-box in FreeFEM (using readmesh3 for MEDIT files and gmshload for GMSH files). But, the problem will be labeling the entities in complex geometries in a way that can be read easily inside FreeFEM programs to be used for defining regions and boundary conditions.
