    Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (baptised as Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus) was born in Salzburg, Austria, on 27 January 1756. His father was Leopold Mozart (1719-1787), a violinist and composer, and his mother was Anna Maria Pertl, who added to the family income by making lace. Wolfgang was the youngest of the couple's seven children.
    Until the late 20th century the work was most often heard as it had been completed by Mozart’s student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Later completions have since been offered, and the most favourably received among these is one by American musicologist Robert D. Levin.
