    The county was named for Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Farming, particularly cotton, was the main industry, with enslaved labor contributing to the wealth of the area. The Civil War (1861-65) destroyed much of that economic prosperity but actually caused little physical damage in the county.
    Gwinnett County ( / ɡwɪˈnɛt / gwih-NET) is located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. It forms part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, being located about 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Atlanta city limits.
    The county was formed from the combination of land that was ceded to the state of Georgia by the Cherokee and Creek Indians and a portion of Jackson County. Gwinnett was the 50th county to be organized in the state. The county currently covers 437 square miles and includes approximately 280,000 acres of land.
