Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1755, or 1757 [a] – July 12, 1804) was an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first secretary of the treasury from 1789 to 1795 during George Washington's presidency .
A would-be quasi-aristocrat with one whole foot out of the monarchist closet, Hamilton was an 18th Century bankster, something his whiskey tax and his response to the subsequent Whiskey Rebellion make all too clear.
Hamilton's vision was challenged by Virginia agrarians Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who formed the Democratic-Republican Party. They favored strong state governments based in rural America and protected by state militias as opposed to a strong national government supported by a national army and navy.
