The High Precision Event Timer ( HPET) is a hardware timer available in modern x86-compatible personal computers. Compared to older types of timers available in the x86 architecture, HPET allows more efficient processing of highly timing-sensitive applications, such as multimedia playback and OS task switching.
Use the High Precision Event Timer (HPET) ACPI Support option to enable or disable the High Precision Event Timer (HPET) table and device object in ACPI. From the System Utilities screen, select System Configuration > BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) > Advanced Options > High Precision Event Timer (HPET) ACPI Support. Select a setting.
I found the setting under Advanced Mode > Advanced > PCH Configuration > High Precision Timer but you may find it in a different location. The PC should display information on how to enter the BIOS on start; common keys to press to enter the BIOS include ESC, F1, or DEL.
All computers that shipped with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 used a platform counter (High Precision Event Timer (HPET)) or the ACPI Power Management Timer (PM timer) as the basis for QPC. Such platform timers have higher access latency than the TSC and are shared between multiple processors.
