    Markham, Ontario is a city in York Region, Ontario, Canada. It is approximately 30 km (19 mi) northeast of Downtown Toronto. Markham had a population of 338,503 in the 2021 Census, making it the largest city in York Region, the fourth largest in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and the 16th largest in Canada.
    The city gained its name from Upper Canada's first Lieutenant-Governor, John Graves Simcoe (in office 1791–1796), who named it after his friend William Markham, who was the Archbishop of York from 1776 to 1807.
    Since the 1980s, Markham has been recognized as a suburb of Toronto. The city comprises six major communities: Berczy Village, Cornell, Markham Village, Milliken, Thornhill and Unionville.
