    Microsoft Exchange Server is a mail server and calendaring server developed by Microsoft. It runs exclusively on Windows Server operating systems. Microsoft Exchange Server was first introduced as Exchange Server 4.0, to position it as the successor to Microsoft Mail 3.5.
    The first release of Microsoft Exchange Server outside of Microsoft was on May 23, 1996, with the initial release. This version was called Exchange Server 4.0 and was followed by five service packs over the next two years. It introduced the new Exchange Administrator console and opened up "integrated" access to SMTP -based networks for the first time.
