Ophiocordyceps sinensis ( synonym Cordyceps sinensis ), known colloquially as caterpillar fungus, is an entomopathogenic fungus (a fungus that grows on insects) in the family Ophiocordycipitaceae. It is mainly found in the meadows above 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) on the Tibetan Plateau in Tibet and the Himalayan regions of Bhutan, India, and Nepal.
Clarification of the species diversity of Ophiocordyceps sinensis and its relatives could expand the traditional medicinal resources and provide insights into the speciation and adaptation. The study is prompted by the discovery of a new species, O. megala, described here from a biodiversity hotspot in the Hengduan Mountains, China.
The recognition of Ophiocordyceps sinensis as the national fungus of China and “fungus of the year” for the journal Mycology will make scientists in different disciplines more aware of O. sinensis and thereby promote new research on this interesting and important fungus.
Genetic diversity of Ophiocordyceps sinensis, a medicinal fungus endemic to the Tibetan Plateau: implications for its evolution and conservation. BMC Evolutionary Biology 9: 920. Yang, Z.-L. 2020. Ophiocordyceps sinensis (amended version of 2020 assessment).
Additionally, based on the phylogenetic construction of Ophiocordyceps, a special clade was focused phylogenetically on the more closely related O. sinensis complex, which was defined as the O. sinensis- species complex lineage. A total of 10 species were currently confirmed in this lineage.
